April 25, 2010

April 25, 2010 is another big event in Aklan.

On this day, Aklan will celebrate its 54th anniversary as an independent province from Capiz, after more than three centuries of being a part of Capiz.

It should be recalled that before the Spaniards came to Aklan, Aklan was already an independent "province" when the whole of Panay was divided into three political units: Aklan, Antique, and Iloilo. There was no Capiz then. But when the Spaniards came, they found out that there was enough food found in Pan-ay. They then decided that the seat of government in Aklan be transferred to Pan-ay. That erased the province of Aklan in the map of the Philippines until April 25, 1956 when then Pres. Ramon Magsaysay signed RA 1414. The bill was filed by then Congressman Godofredo P. Ramos, making him the Father of Aklan.
